Edward B. Williston joined the U.S. Army in 1861. He commanded Battery D, 2nd U.S., throughout the war and won the Congressional Medal of Honor at Trevilian Station. He ended his 39-year career as a brigadier general. But mostly, he just might be the toughest-looking guy you've ever seen.

1LT Alonzo Cushing gave his all at Gettysburg. Commanding his guns, he was struck first in the shoulder; refusing to quit, he was horribly wounded as a fragment tore through his bowels; holding his ground yet, he was killed by a bullet to the head. He was 22 y/o. Cushing was awarded the MOH in 2014.

While "artillery" conjures images of field guns, the majority of peacetime Federal artillery companies were essentially infantrymen manning heavy guns inside fixed fortifications, usually along the seacoast. Here are some fine images of static heavy artillery pieces, taken during the Civil War.

A portrait of CPT James M. Robertson. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd U.S. Artillery in 1838, served in the Mexican War, Third Seminole War, and Civil War, and retired as a major in 1879. Robertson commanded an artillery brigade during the Civil War and earned four brevet promotions. (LOC)

Jefferson C. Davis (no, not that Jefferson Davis) was a BG (Volunteers) and one of Sherman's corps commanders in Georgia. Post-war, he was a Regular Army colonel of infantry. But from 1848-61, Davis was a lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery, and from 1861-66, captain of Battery E, 1st U.S.

An interesting wartime photo of artillerists from the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery drilling at Fort Richardson, in the defenses of Washington, D.C. These pieces are likely M1819 24-pounder siege guns--note the mixed carriages.

The enlisted men of Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery, at Culpeper, VA, ca. September 1863. This battery fielded six three-inch Ordnance rifles; as a horse artillery battery, all personnel travelled mounted accompanying Federal cavalry. I counted 114 men in this group. (LOC)
