Black is the night, metal we fight.... The First Wave of Black Metal was an era (not a genre, although many first wave bands can be considered black metal as we know it today) which lasted from 1981 to 1991-ish. It consisted of various Black Metal, Thrash Metal, Speed Metal, Doom Metal and Heavy Metal acts that started the black metal genre, and heavily influenced the sound of its resurgence in the early 90s.
