Democracy is frequently wrongly conflated with "freedom". This is far from the case: Democracy is simply "rule by the people". Rights in fact INFRINGE on this "rule by the people" by limiting the degree to which they may rule.

It should be an uncontroversial statement that a lynch mob is a pure expression of "rule by the people". If 99% want to eliminate 1%, then it's indeed an expression of "rule by the people" if they use power to eliminate that 1%.
